How to Reinstall Adobe Reader 8.1

Each new iteration of Adobe's Reader software changes various aspects of the program. The tenth version, known as Reader X, reduced the size of the user interface and added several advanced commenting features, among other items. Some people may simply not like the look and feel of the newer editions and want to revert to past iterations. Adobe's website offers only the newest version of Reader, 8.2 at the time of publication, but you can still find version 8.1 on other software-supplying websites. Before you can install Adobe 8.1, however, you'll need to uninstall any newer versions.

Instructions

  1. Uninstall Newer Versions

    • 1

Click on the "Control Panel" option in the "Start" Menu. The Windows Control Panel opens.

    • 2

Click "Programs," then "Programs and Features."

    • 3

Highlight the Adobe Reader program already installed on your computer by clicking it.

    • 4

Select "Uninstall" from the list of toolbar options. The Adobe Uninstaller appears and starts the uninstallation process.

    • 5

Perform any tasks as instructed by the Adobe Uninstaller. Restart your computer after the process is complete.

    Install Version 8.1

    • 6

Open a Web browser and navigate to a website that still offers Adobe 8.1 as a download, such as Brothersoft (brothersoft.com), FileHippo (filehippo.com) or Old Apps (oldapps.com).

    • 7

Click the "Download" link on the page. Follow the site-specific steps to download the Adobe Reader 8.1 Installer file.

    • 8

Double-click the file to launch the Adobe Installer. Agree to Adobe's terms of use.

    • 9

Choose where you'd like to save the program and whether you want desktop and Start menu icons when asked by the Installer.

    • 10

Restart your computer when told to by the Adobe Installer.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Adobe 8.1 Installer aborts installation if it detects you have a newer version of the Reader software on your PC.
