How to Add a File to iPhone Mail

Save

The free "Mail" app that comes installed on Apple's iPhone only lets you attach photos and videos shot with the iPhone's two built-in cameras or that you transfer from your computer to the phone via Apple's free iTunes application on your computer. If you want to attach other types of files, such as a text document or a spreadsheet, you will need to use a third-party app, which you can download from Apple's iTunes Store. The iPhone connects to the Internet over Wi-Fi and cellular data networks. It has a touch-sensitive screen that you tap and touch to launch applications and type email messages.

Preparation

  • Launch iTunes on your computer. You use iTunes to manage your iPhone.

  • Connect your iPhone to a USB port on your computer with the iPhone's included USB cable. The iPhone's icon will appear under "Devices" in the left pane of the iTunes window.

  • Click on "iTunes Store." Click in the search box, type the name of a third-party app, such as "FileApp," "Documents to Go" or "Group Email! With Attachments," and then hit "Enter" to search for the app. You can also type "attachments" in the search box to find apps that can email attachments.

  • Download the app to your computer and then drag it onto the icon of your iPhone in the left pane of the iTunes application window to copy it to the iPhone.

  • Click on the icon of your iPhone. Click the "Apps" tab at the top of the iTunes window. Scroll to the bottom of the window to the "File Sharing" section, where you will see a list of all the apps on your iPhone that you can use to transfer files between your computer and the device. Click on the name of the third-party app you just downloaded to select it. The name of that app will appear above the documents window on the right.

  • Drag a file, such as a spreadsheet or a text document from a folder on your hard drive, into the documents window in iTunes. The file will transfer over to your iPhone, which you can access using the third-party app.
