Dark or black lips are a nuisance for many people with fair, light or medium complexions. The darkening itself is not a serious medical issue, but may be indicative of bad habits. Smoking, dehydration, heavy sun exposure, overuse of dark lipstick and excess coffee and tea consumption can all contribute to the blackening. Removing the unwanted black coating can be accomplished safely, without the need for chemicals or medical intervention.
Things You'll Need
- Soft-bristled toothbrush
- Lip balm
- Lemon juice
- Cotton swabs
- Almond oil
Avoid consuming or using products that are darkening your lips. Quitting smoking, stopping using dark lipstick shades or cutting out your morning cup of coffee or tea will help.
Exfoliate the skin on your lips with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Gently rub your lips with the dry toothbrush once a day until your lips begin to lighten.
Apply lip balm several times a day. Use a lip balm that contains an SPF, or sun-protection factor, of at least 15; it will not only moisturize your lips but protect them from the sun.
Apply a coating of lemon juice to the lips once a day with a cotton swab. The lemon juice will naturally and gently lighten your lips.
Dip a cotton swab into almond oil; apply it to the lips once a day for three to four weeks.
Speak to a doctor or dermatologist if the at-home lip-lightening treatments are not effective after two to four weeks. There are medical options, including prescription lightening creams, that the doctor may recommend.
