How to Get Rid of Skunks With Household Items

While you may not see skunks invading your property, you'll certainly be able to smell them. Startled skunks spray a vile, pungent liquid at potential attackers, and the scent lingers for weeks. Skunks also forage for food and will rip open garbage bags and tear up your garden in minutes. You can repel skunks with items you might already have in your home.

Things You'll Need

  • Bungee cords
  • 1 quart hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1 tsp. dish soap
  • Gallon pump sprayer
  • Aluminum foil
  • Hot sauce
  • Pick up debris and lawn clippings in your yard. Skunks dig and nest under branches and wood piles, so removing these from your property reduces the occurrence of pesky skunks.

  • Lock garbage cans in a secure shed or garage. Skunks are opportunistic and tear through trash bags to find a quick meal. When trash day comes, secure garbage can lids with bungee cords to ward off marauding skunks.

  • Pour 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, 1/2 cup baking soda and 1 tsp. liquid dish soap in a pump sprayer, and shake gently to combine. Spray this solution around garbage cans, doorways and exterior windows to repel skunks.

  • Wrap tree trunks and plant stems with aluminum foil if skunks are raiding your garden. The noisy crackling of aluminum foil is highly irritating to skunks, and they will not climb on your plants.

  • Dab a few drops of hot sauce at the base of flowers and around entryways to keep skunks away. Capsaicin, the active ingredient in hot sauce, is highly irritating to the skunks' nasal cavity and deters them from coming back into your yard.

Tips & Warnings

  • If there are numerous skunks on your property, contact a professional pest control service. Exterminators are armed with a number of safe, non-toxic tools to permanently remove and relocate skunks.
  • Never trap skunks without professional assistance. A trapped skunk might spray you as you attempt to move the trap.
