How to Get an A/C Refrigeration Certification

Heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) systems allow building occupants to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures and air quality. HVACR professionals may perform installations or routine system maintenance and repair. Workers may enter the field by enrolling in high school vocational programs, trade schools or apprenticeship programs. HVACR workers who use refrigerants must attain the appropriate certification per Section 608 of the Clean Air Act. Technicians may test to handle refrigerant for small appliances, high-pressure and low-pressure appliances (Types I-III) or test for a universal certification, which covers all three types of systems.

  • Familiarize yourself with the topics included on the EPA Certification Test. For each certification, technicians should know key information on subjects such as Section 608 regulations, ozone depletion and safety. Each certification requires additional information specific to each system type.

  • Identify an EPA approved testing provider.

  • Register for the exam and pay all applicable fees.

  • Take the exam on your designated date. Technicians must answer at least 70 percent of the examination questions correctly in order to pass.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many trades schools and organizations offer courses to help technicians prepare for the Section 608 exam. Technicians do not have to enroll in a course to take an exam.
