How to Get Wireless Internet on a Dell Inspiron 1000

The Dell Inspiron 1000 is a laptop computer that comes with a 2.2-gigahertz Intel Celeron processor. It includes 512 megabytes of RAM and a 40-gigabyte hard drive, but it does not come with an integrated wireless network interface card. To utilize a Wi-Fi hotspot, a wireless PC Card must be installed in the laptop. Linksys and Netgear are two of numerous vendors that produce a wireless card for the Dell Inspiron 1000.

Things You'll Need

  • Wireless PC Card
  • Installation CD
  • Install the drivers for the wireless PC Card. Put the installation CD in the laptop's optical drive and close the tray. When the splash screen appears, click on the "Click Here to Start" link. Read and accept the license agreement to continue.

  • Install the wireless PC Card by inserting the card snugly into the PC Card slot, which is located on the right or left side of the Inspiron 1000. Click "Next." The setup wizard will detect the wireless card and install the correct drivers. Click "Finish."

  • Configure the wireless network card. Every Wi-Fi hotspot has its own security code to control access to the hosted network. The network card automatically recognizes the type of network to which it is connecting and either alerts the user that the network is insecure or asks for a security key. Obtain the security key from the network administrator if you don't already have it. After entering the security key, click "Connect." The Dell Inspiron 1000 now has wireless Internet.
