Set a schedule for studying.

Many students panic when it comes time to study for a basic math test. Teachers give basic math tests to gauge how well students understand math facts learned in their classes. The amount of information to memorize may seem overwhelming, but students can study successfully by getting a headstart so that they do not have to cram the night before the test. It is also advantageous for students to find out whether the basic math test is composed of multiple-choice questions or requires students to fill in the blanks.

Instructions

    • 1

Set a schedule giving you a designated time to study, 20 minutes every night, for example. Make sure you are not interrupted. Turn your phone off, avoid checking your e-mail and focus only on studying.

    • 2

Review the notes that you took in class. If you are good at taking notes, review the textbook. Make study cards that include the most essential information from the pertinent section in your math book. Using index cards, write equations on one side and answers on the other.

    • 3

Perform math exercises. Your textbook has sample questions in each chapter that summarize the math facts that you must know for your test. Do the math as a form of studying, because chances are you will have to answer equations on the test.

    • 4

Use your study cards to quiz yourself and study. Separate the math facts that you got incorrect the first time around, and practice them until you have memorized the equations.

    • 5

Ask others to help you study. Ask your parents to help quiz you on math facts, or organize a study group with friends where all of you can quiz each other.

    • 6

Use your teacher as a resource. If your teacher offers to stay after class to answer questions about the test, take advantage. It might help you clarify points of confusion. Do not be afraid to ask your teacher for clarification.

Tips & Warnings

  • Find out whether your teacher will allow you to use a calculator during the test and adjust your study techniques accordingly.

  • Get plenty of sleep and eat a healthy, filling meal before the test.
