How to Improve Our Relationship Before the Baby Is Born thumbnail
Constant communication is the key to a healthy relationship.

A newborn can enhance the quality of a relationship and bring families closer together. Yet, relationships can also fail miserably with a new addition if the relationship is not healthy and stable. If you are pregnant and find that your relationship needs improvement, remain hopeful. Relationships are subject to ebb and flow, and they require constant attention and adjusting to remain in balance.

Instructions

    • 1

Engage in more fun activities together. Nothing says I love you like showing an interest in the hobbies of your significant other. Walk, watch movies, play board games or listen to music together more often. These activities take the attention off of the problems, and allow you to enjoy being in one another's presence. Growing closer during the pregnancy will strengthen the bond when the baby arrives. You will find that the more you engage one another, the more you will be able to relate.

    • 2

Express the issues that are placing a strain on the relationship. If you do not address the underlying problems, you won't know what you need to work on. Do not be hesitant to state exactly how you feel. Keep a calm voice to avoid a heavy argument. This is especially important for pregnant mothers, who risk health issues from excessive stress and strain. It is best to talk about the problems as they arise.

    • 3

Be realistic about what you expect from the relationship. Many people give up their friendships, distance themselves from their family and abandon their interests when they enter a serious relationship. This is not healthy. Keep your social network open, so that it enhances and enlivens your relationship. You will need your friends and family's support when the baby arrives.

    • 4

Surprise one another with an occasional dozen roses or date. It is a small gesture to surprise your partner with something like candy or a new pair of shoes, but it goes a long way. If you decide to take him out on a date, be creative by going to the spot where you kissed him for the first time.

    • 5

Keep an open mind and listen to what your partner is trying to communicate. It is common for people to feel like winning an argument gives them a leg up, but stubbornness only creates more problems. Let go of your ego and listen to what your partner has to say. Reassert what he says by nodding your head and saying you understand. Showing that you understand your partner can be the boost that your relationship needs to succeed.
