How to Mute Bright Gold Leather With the Rit Brand Dye

Leather can be dyed nearly any color. Leather is often dyed bold colors such as bright blue, red and gold. If you have some gold leather that you want to make less bright or change the color of altogether, you can use the RIT brand of dye. RIT dyes are simple to use and do not fade easily. Follow all directions carefully so that you end up with the desired color. Use a combination of orange and brown dye to give the leather a somewhat rusty color. If you don't want a rust color, then use brown dye alone.

Instructions

    • 1

Dip a soft cloth into rubbing alcohol. Rub the cloth onto the leather to remove any finish or dirt from the surface of the leather. This will help the leather accept the new dye color.

    • 2

Wash the leather in the washing machine using the delicate setting and gentle laundry soap. Do not dry the leather.

    • 3

Fill a large bucket with three gallons of warm water per pound of fabric. Pour in a quarter-bottle of orange dye and a quarter-bottle of brown dye per pound of fabric. Mix the dye into the liquid until they are completely combined.

    • 4

Put the leather inside the bucket. Stir constantly for at least 10 minutes. For a darker shade, stir up to 30 minutes.

    • 5

Remove the leather from the bath and rinse in warm water for about five minutes. Switch to cool water and rise the leather until the water runs clear.

    • 6

Place the leather in the washing machine. Wash the leather on the gentle cycle using warm water and gentle laundry soap. Run the leather through a cool rinse cycle twice.

    • 7

Air dry the leather. Don't place the leather directly in the sun, unless you want the color to fade even further.

    • 8

Condition the leather. Rub a leather conditioner onto the surface of the leather after it dries. This will prevent the leather from drying out and cracking.
