How to Handle an Impatient Boss

Save

An impatient boss can make your work life feel stressful and horrible on a daily basis. Impatient people demand that things are done according to their schedules and often make outrageous demands that cannot be accomplished. This situation can lead to everyday stress as you struggle to get your work done on your boss's schedule instead of your own.

  • Ask questions when your boss gives you an unreasonable deadline or wants you to complete a project right away. Ask about the long-term goals of the project, whether it should be done right away and whether it is more important than other work that you are currently completing. This might help your boss see the bigger picture and be less impatient about getting this specific project done.

  • Tell your boss that quality work is important to you, and give him a reasonable amount of time that you need to get the work done. Tell him about the other projects that you are currently working on so that he knows you are working hard, but simply have a lot on your plate.

  • Have compassion for your impatient boss. A person who is extremely impatient and hard on others is probably also hard on herself. Even though it might feel difficult, try to put yourself in her shoes. She is probably experiencing a lot of pressure herself if she is acting this way with you.

  • Talk to your boss with respect even when you are feeling disrespected and angry. If you consistently show your boss respect, he may begin to see that he should not treat you in such a harsh way. Be assertive and do not let him walk all over you, but do it with a smile and sincerity.

  • Tell your boss that you are having an issue working with her due to her impatience. Leave this as a final resort, as you do not want to lose your job due to a confrontation. If you cannot handle the impatience any longer, speak to her and express your concerns before quitting and working somewhere else.
