How to Set Up FSX for a Joystick

Save

Although it's possible to play "Microsoft Flight Simulator (FSX)" with the mouse and keyboard, you will not be able to maneuver aircraft as accurately as you can with a joystick. The advanced and expert missions are very difficult to pass without a precision controller (yoke or joystick) and even basic maneuvers such as steep turns, coordinated turns and landings are made easier with a joystick. "Microsoft Flight Simulator (FSX)" supports a variety of joysticks and allows you to change almost every keybinding option available.

  • Connect the joystick to your computer using the appropriate USB or PS/2 port. If the joystick requires installation, insert the installation disc that comes with the joystick and follow the instructions to complete the setup.

  • Start "Microsoft Flight Simulator."

  • Click "Options." Select "Settings" and click "Controls." Click "Joystick Axis." Double-click the command you want to change and press the button on the joystick to assign the command to that button. Click "OK" to confirm the changes.

  • Click "Back" to return to the Controls screen. Click the "Buttons/Keys" tab. A list of all the aircraft controls for every configuration (such as in-air controls and taxi controls) will be displayed. Double-click the command you want to change and press the button on the joystick to assign the command to that button. Click "OK" to confirm the changes.
