How to Tell If a Domain Redirects

In the case that a website changes names or essentially shuts down and is overtaken by a different website, a Web developer will add some HTML code to the site that forces the domain's pages to redirect. Redirecting a Web page means that visitors that come to visit the site are forwarded on to another URL. The only person with power to redirect a domain is the developer of a website. To redirect a site, you must have access to the back-end Web server.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your Web browser of choice.

    • 2

Type a URL into your address bar.

    • 3

Press "Enter." If the page that loads has the same URL that you just typed, the domain does not redirect. If the URL is different from the URL you typed in Step 2, the domain does redirect.
