How to Paint With Metallics
Metallic paint is used to paint craft items and add luster. This is done to wood, ceramic, plaster, concrete, plastic, metal and glass objects. Acrylic-based metallic paint is the most common type used by crafter's. Oil-based metallic paint takes longer to dry and clean-up requires the use of mineral spirits. Acrylic metallic paint takes approximately 15 minutes to dry with a simple clean-up using water. Enjoy adding luster to any item using acrylic-based metallic paint.
Things You'll Need
- Newspaper
- Bisque fired ceramic item (This is a ceramic item that does not have a glazed surface)
- Paper plate
- Acrylic metalic paint
- Artist's paintbrushes
- Water container
- Water
- Napkin or paper towel
- Spray acrylic sealer

Cover a flat, stable work surface with newspaper. Place a bisque fired ceramic item such as a flower pot, small figurine or ornament on the newspaper.

Squeeze a dime size drop of metallic paint on a paper plate.

Dip the artist's paintbrush in water. Dab the end of the paintbrush on a napkin or paper towel to remove excess water.

Dip the end of the wet paintbrush in the metallic paint and load the bristles with paint.

Paint the selected area on the ceramic item. Repeat Steps 2 through 5 until all metallic areas are painted the desired color. Allow the completed item to dry 15 minutes.

Shake the can of acrylic spray sealer for 60 seconds. Hold the can 12-inches from the painted surface. Spray a thin layer of sealer over the surface. Allow the sealer to dry 15 minutes. Repeat the spraying process for a total of three thin layers of acrylic sealer. Allow the final coat to dry 15 minutes before moving.

Tips & Warnings
Paint small areas on an item to add shine and luster. For example, paint a ceramic figurine with acrylic paint. Paint the eyes with metallic acrylic paint to add luster.
