How to Sync Evernote and Dropbox

Save

The Evernote desktop application can monitor desktop folders for changes and automatically import new files into your notebooks. You can sync a Dropbox folder in Evernote using the Import Folder command. Many free third-party integration tools can also help you sync your data between services over the Internet. You can use IFTTT to automatically import Dropbox files into notes in your Evernote account. Zapier provides similar functions as IFTTT with an emphasis on business tools and customization.

Monitor Dropbox Folders

  • Open the Evernote desktop app, click "Tools," then "Import Folders…" Any folders that Evernote monitors are listed in the white box.

  • Click the "Add…" button. Select the Dropbox folder containing the files you wish to import into Evernote. Click "OK."

  • Select "Yes" under Subfolders to monitor subfolders for changes as well. Select a notebook in the Notebook column. Click "OK." Files you add to your selected Dropbox folder automatically import into Evernote.

Use IFTTT

  • Open the IFTTT website (link in Resources). Click the "Join IFTTT" button. Fill in the fields, including your username, email and password, and then click the "Create Account" button.

  • Click "Channels" at the top of the page, scroll down and then click "Dropbox." Click the "Activate" button, sign in with your Dropbox account and then click "Allow" to active the Dropbox channel.

  • Click "My Recipes" at the top of the page and then click the "Create a Recipe" button. Click "This," select "Dropbox" and then select one of the triggers. For example, select "New File in your Folder" to select a Dropbox folder you wish to sync with Evernote. Enter a subfolder name if you want to include only a specific Dropbox folder. Click the "Create Trigger" button.

  • Click "That," select "Evernote" and then click the "Activate" button. Sign in with your Evernote account and then click "Authorize." Click "Done" to activate the Evernote channel.

  • Click the "Continue to the Next Step" button and then select one of the actions. For example, select "Append to Note" if you want to add your Dropbox files to an existing Evernote note.

  • Fill in any optional information for your action. For example, enter the name of one of your Evernote notebooks, or enter a new title for a notebook, into the field under "Notebook." Enter tags for your notes into the field under "Tags," separated by commas. Click the "Create Action" button.

  • Click the "Create Recipe" button. Your recipe will automatically run and sync with Evernote whenever new files are added to your Dropbox folder.

Zapier

  • Open the Zapier website and then click the "Sign Up" button. Enter your email, first name, last name and password and then click the "Sign Up" button. Click the "Skip this for Now" link at the bottom of the popup.

  • Click "Make a Zap!" at the top of the page. Click "Choose a Trigger App…," scroll down and then select "Dropbox."

  • Click "choose a Trigger…," then "Show all Triggers" and then select a trigger. For example, select "New File in Directory" to trigger when new files are added to your Dropbox.

  • Click "Choose an Action App…," scroll down and then select "Evernote." Click "Choose an Action…," scroll down and then select "Show all Actions." Select one of the actions. For example, select "Create Note" to create a new note in Evernote when items are added to your Dropbox folder. Click the "Continue" button.

  • Click "Connect a Dropbox Account" and then "Continue." Sign in with your Dropbox account and then click the "Allow" button. Click the "Continue" button when your Dropbox account is added under Select a Dropbox Account.

  • Click "Connect an Evernote Account" and then "Continue." Sign in with your Evernote account and then click the "Authorize" button. Click "Continue" after your Evernote account appears under Select a Evernote Account.

  • Click the drop-down box under Directory and then select the Dropbox folder you wish to import files from. Alternatively, leave the directory as "/" to use your root Dropbox folder. Click the "Continue" button.

  • Select your Evernote notebook in the "Notebook" field. Click the "Insert Fields" button in the Title field and then select a field to use as your note's title. For example, select "File Name" to title your note after the Dropbox file. Click the "Insert Fields" button next to Content and then select the content you wish to import. For example, select "File" to import the entire file or "Direct Media Link" to import a link to your Dropbox file.

  • Click the "Continue" button at the bottom, then the "Test Dropbox Trigger" button, then "Continue." Enter a name for your Zap into the "Unnamed Zap" field and then click "Turn Zap On." New items added to Dropbox will be imported as specified into your Evernote folder every five minutes.
