How to Use a Corn Peeler

Use a corn peeler when the corn kernels are juiciest.

A corn peeler allows a person to remove the kernels of corn off the cob in a fast and convenient way. While corn on the cob can be enjoyed during the harvest season, a corn peeler can help you enjoy corn off the cob year round. By removing the kernels, you can bag and freeze the kernels for future use. A knife can be used for this same purpose, but the design of a corn peeler takes the curvature of the cob into consideration. This minimizes the amount of the kernel left on the actual cob.

Things You'll Need

• Corn cob holder
• Cutting board

Instructions

1. Poke a corn cob holder into the tapered or pointy end of the piece of corn.

2. Set the thickest end of the corn cob down on a cutting board and hold the corn cob holder with your left hand.

3. Tilt the cob to a 70 degree angle.

4. Grip the corn peeler with your right hand and slide it down along the length of the corn cob. Apply even pressure as you slide it down so that it cuts the kernels off at their bases. After each pass, turn the cob a little and cut another few rows of kernels off. Repeat this process until all kernels have been removed from the cob.

Tips & Warnings

• If you have the type of peeler that has a circular cutting blade, you just set it on top of the cob's tapered end and push downward to slice the kernels off the cob's circumference.

• Corn peelers have razor sharp blades that can peel your skin right off. Be careful.
