Turn a pile of diapers in to a centerpiece.

Diaper cakes are a unique gift that an expectant mother can actually use. Making a diaper cake is fairly easy and allows you to match the cake to the baby shower theme. The size of the cake is easily adjusted by adding or subtracting diapers. A large, three-tier cake makes a beautiful centerpiece for a baby shower. The assembly time and cost of a diaper cake will vary depending on the size of the cake and the materials used to "decorate" it. Even a large cake shouldn't take more than two hours to put together.

Things You'll Need

  • Cake platter
  • 60 newborn diapers
  • 40 to 50 small rubber bands
  • 6 large rubber bands
  • 1-1/4 inch thick ribbon
  • ¼ thick ribbon
  • Tall bottle of baby lotion or wash
  • 4 oz. baby bottle
  • Small baby items

Instructions

    • 1

Open the diapers and unfold them. Tightly roll up 20 of the diapers separately, starting the roll from the back of the diaper so that the front design shows. Secure the diapers with a small rubber band.

    • 2

Place the baby lotion in the center of the cake platter. Standing the rolled diapers on end, surround the lotion with one layer of diapers. Secure the whole thing with a large rubber band.

    • 3

Make a second ring of diapers around the first. Secure that ring with another large rubber band.

    • 4

Roll another 20 diapers tightly, but this time secure them with the thin ribbon instead of rubber bands. This layer will be the outer ring of the bottom tier.

    • 5

Line up the outer ring of diapers and use a large rubber band to secure them. Cover the band with the thick ribbon.

    • 6

Create the second tier of the cake the same way, using the upper half of the lotion bottle as a center point. Use small rubber bands to secure the rolled up diapers on the inside ring, and put a large rubber band around the entire ring. This time the second ring will get the ribbon.

    • 7

Use the 4 oz. baby bottle as the center point for the top tier of the cake. This tier will only have one ring, so there will be no small rubber bands.

    • 8

Tie small baby toys, pacifiers or other small baby items to the cake as decorations.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't know the sex of the baby, stick with yellow or green colored ribbon.

  • Don't use pins or anything sharp to construct the cake. They might accidentally get into a diaper and stick the baby.
