How to Activate an AT&T Smartchip

Save

A smartchip is another name for a subscriber identity module or SIM card. Global Systems for Mobile Communications cellular service providers such as AT&T Wireless use smartchips to identity subscribers on the cellular service network. When you purchase a new phone and smartchip at an AT&T store, the store clerk will automatically activate the smartchip for you at the time of purchase. On the other hand, when you purchase a new phone online or by telephone, you will need to use AT&T Wireless' online activation system to activate your new smartchip.

  • Go to the AT&T Wireless activation homepage.

  • Select the option that corresponds to your activation type. AT&T provides an option for new customers, phone upgrades, additional lines and pay as you go.

  • Enter your 10-digit AT&T Wireless phone number and select your verification method from the drop-down menu. AT&T can verify your identity using billing or shipping zip code or the last four digits of your Social Security Number or tax ID number. Enter the verification number and click the blue "Next" button.

  • Enter your phone's IMEI number. You can find this number under the phone's battery on the bar code sticker. Alternatively, you can power on your cellular phone and enter "*#06#" using the phone's keypad. You will find the phone's IMEI number listed on the phone's display.

  • Enter your smart chip's ICCID number. You will find this number printed on the front of the smart chip.

  • Click the "Next" button to complete the activation of your AT&T Wireless phone and smartchip.
