Use meta tags to let search engines know what type of content is in your web site

Meta tags, words that define the type of content, and the publication information (such as author and date of publication), are important if you want to generate web traffic and reach those who need your site's information. Search engines use meta tags to find the web site that best matches the search words entered into the search engine. Creating keyword and description meta tags in Dreamweaver CS3 is relatively simple. However, other types of tags, such as the author meta tag, need to entered directly into the Dreamweaver as HTML code.

Instructions

      Start the Dreamweaver CS3 program. Click the "HTML" option underneath the "Create New" column on the Dreamweaver splash screen (opening screen) that appears.

      Select "Save" from the "File" menu on Dreamweaver's CS3 main menu bar. Type in the file name, "metaTest" in the "File name:" text box in the "Save As" dialog box that appears. Click the "Save" button that is to the right of the "File Name" text box.

      Click the "Properties" option from the "Window" menu on the main Dreamweaver menu bar to display the "Properties" panel.

      Click the "Insert" menu on the Dreamweaver CS3's main menu bar. Click the "HTML" option in the "Insert" menu. Click the "Head Tags" within the "HTML" menu. Now click the "Meta" option in the "HTML" menu(Insert>HTML>Head Tags>Meta). Type in the meta words you want to add in the "content" text box in the "Meta" dialog box that appears. Type the meta words "Dreamweaver CS3 meta tag procedures, Dreamweaver CS3 meta keyword procedures, how to set up meta tags for your Dreamweaver web page." Click the "OK" button within the "Meta" dialog box to save these meta tags and close the "Meta" dialog box.

      Click the "Meta" graphic icon (a graphic of two pieces of paper) in the meta panels that is just above the main document window. Position your mouse cursor in the "Content" textbox within the "meta" properties panel displayed. Add the words "Adobe CS3 instructions," as another meta tag phrase.

      Repeat the above procedure for keywords and descriptions meta words. Use the "Keyword" and "Description" options in the "HTML" menu instead of the "Meta" option. After you type your own keywords in the "keyword" meta text box and close the "keyword" dialog box, click the "key" icon on the meta panels to view and edit the keywords you entered in the "keyword" meta panel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Click the "Code" option from the "View" menu on Dreamweaver's CS3 main menu bar to view the the HTML markup for your meta words. Find the actual meta words and change and add to them in "Code" view instead of "Design" view. Add an author meta tag when in "Code" view with the HTML line statement "<meta name = "author" content ="Mark C. Stansberry"/>." Review the resource in the resource section titled "W3; The Global Structure of an HTML Document; Section 7.4.4 Meta Data" for accepted meta tag standards for different types of meta tags such as author and publication date.

  • The properties panel must be displayed so that you can view and edit the meta words and descriptions you entered when you select the meta icons on the meta icons panel. The Google search engine will ignore meta tags it doesn't knew. Visit Google's "Meta Tags -Webmaster Tool" page listed in the resource section for more details.
