How to Reset a Compaq Presario C700

Your Compaq Presario C700 laptop came with Windows XP or Windows Vista pre-installed, depending on when you bought the computer. Occasionally, the operating system or certain applications may become unresponsive, prompting a reset of the computer. Unsaved work is lost if the application or operating system freezes while you are working. Resetting the computer restores the system to normal operation after an error.

Normal Reset Procedure

  • Click the "Start" or "Windows Icon" button in the bottom left corner of the screen.

  • Click "Turn Off Computer" or the white arrow button, depending on your system. A menu appears.

  • Click the green "Restart" button or click "Restart" from the menu. The computer powers down and starts up fresh.

Unresponsive Operating System Reset Procedure

  • Locate the power button directly above the keyboard, in the center of the computer.

  • Hold the power button down for four seconds. The computer turns off.

  • Wait a minute, then press the power button. The computer starts fresh.
