How to Sort Information by Date in Excel 2003

When you create a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, you can use it to enter in any kind of information you want. The various methods of sorting include alphabetically, numerically and by date. After you've sorted the information, you can create graphs or charts. This means that you can sort a segment of data by date, then create a chart out of that data -- a chart that wouldn't have made sense until you sorted the information.

  • Open Excel 2003 by double-clicking the icon. Click "File," then "Open" and select the spreadsheet you want to work with.

  • Click on the top left cell of the data you want to sort. Hold down the mouse button, and drag the cursor to the bottom right box, highlighting all of the data.

  • Click the "Data" button, then select "Sort" from the drop-down menu that appears.

  • Click the small arrow by the "Sort By," and select the column that holds all of the dates. Choose "Ascending" if you want older dates to appear first or "Descending" if you want the newest dates to appear first. Click "OK," and Excel will sort the information provided by date.
