How to Obtain a Copy of Your NACLC Security Clearance

Save

A National Agency Check with Law and Credit (NACLC) is required for all people requesting a security clearance for a government or military position, regardless of what level of clearance -- confidential, secret or top secret -- you need. An SF-86 form must be completed to begin the security clearance investigation. Your credit report and background check will also be examined when your clearance application is reviewed. Once your clearance is granted or denied, you will be notified in writing. A copy of your clearance can be obtained through the office that conducted your security clearance investigation.

Office of Personnel Management (OPM)

  • Determine what agency conducted your security clearance investigation by consulting with your employer. Most investigations for the past 35 years years have been run by the Defense Security Service (DSS) or Office of Personnel Management (OPM). If your clearance was investigated after February 20, 2005, you should submit your request to the OPM, as DSS only maintains files prior to this date.

  • Write a request to the OPM and include your full name, social security number, date and place of birth and your current physical address.

  • Sign the request in your own handwriting.

  • Mail the request to: FOI/P, OPM-FIPC, P.O. Box 618, 1137 Branchton Road Boyers, PA 16018-0618 or fax the request to 724-794-4590.

Defense Security Service

  • Write a request and include your full current name, any previously used names, date of birth, social security number, and that you are requesting a copy of your clearance and investigation.

  • Take the written request to a notary public and sign the request in front of them. Have him notarize the request and sign it.

  • Mail the request to: Defense Security Service, Privacy Act Branch, 938 Elkridge Landing Road Linthicum, MD 21090-2917.
