How to Encrypt Databases in MS Access 2003

Access 2003 database encryption was introduced with Access 2007. Prior to that, it was a security feature known as encoding, which lets the users assign security and protection to the database. It reduces the database size so it can be easily copied or emailed to other users. It protects the database from being accessed by word processing software on the user's computer. The encoded database can be decoded when the user decides to remove this security feature.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Access 2003 and click "File." Select one of the recently-opened databases at the end of the File menu. The database opens.

    • 2

      Click "Tools" and "Security."

    • 3

Select "Encode/Decode Database." The database will be compacted and closed. It will re-open when the compaction is complete.
