Hexagon Mylar Template Sewing Instructions
A Mylar hexagon template is sturdy and you can see through it somewhat to aid in placement before cutting or tracing. This gives it several advantages over a paper or cardboard template. You can cut out a Grandmother's Garden quilt and still have an intact template. You can trace quilting lines on a very large bed-quilt and your template will still be usable. Paper or cardboard templates have a very short useful lifespan.

Hexagon Quilt Piecing
-
1
Place template for quilt piecing on the fabric.
-
2
Align the template so that a straight edge of the template is lined up with the straight grain of the fabric. You can cut through two layers of fabric if using scissors. You can cut through four or more layers of fabric using a rotary cutter on a self-healing mat.
-
-
3
Cut the shape out of the fabric using scissors or a rotary cutter with a straight edge lined up on the Mylar straight edges.
-
4
Mark the corners of the fabric 1/4 inch in from the edges at each corner. When you piece the hexagons you will stitch from one corner to another along the edge. Begin and end stitching right on this marking on each edge.
Using Mylar Template for Quilting
-
5
Align your quilt bottom, batting, and top to make a quilt sandwich.
-
6
Baste or pin quilt through all layers. As you baste or pin, check that you have no wrinkles or puckers in any of the layers.
-
7
Place Mylar template on quilt in desired locations and trace the hexagon onto the quilt top with your washable pencil or chalk.
-
8
Stitch your quilting stitches by hand or machine on the traced lines.

Tips & Warnings
When piecing your quilt, stitch along the edge beginning and ending at the dots transferred from the corners of the Mylar template. This will enable you to press seams open. Your quilt top will then lay flat.
