How to Make a Four Way Box Braid Out of String

How to Make a Four Way Box Braid Out of String thumbnail
Use any string to make a box braided string item.

String braided with a four-way box braid is used to create bracelets, keychains and necklaces. The box braid is made with two string. Two strings of the same color create a totally different looking box braid than a box braid made with two different colored strings. The alternating pattern made with two colors of string creates the look of small strips connected together to create a long square tube. The addition of beads into the braid adds another dimension to the visual appearance of the item.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut two pieces of string 36 inches long.

    • 2

Fold each string in half. Match the folded centers of the string and place them on a flat work surface. Keep the folded centers together and turn the two strings to form a plus sign. Position the string directly on the work surface so one end points to the left and the opposite end points to the right. Position the string on top so one end is pointing up and the opposite end is pointing down.

    • 3

Fold the left point to the right leaving a 1-inch loop on the left side of the center. Place the end of the string under the right point and parallel with the right arm.

    • 4

Fold the top point down and over the two horizontal strings. Leave a 1-inch loop to the top of the center. Place the folded string on the right side of the bottom vertical string.

    • 5

Fold the top right arm of the plus sign to the left. Go over the first vertical string and under the second. Pull the string until it is positioned next to the horizontal string.

    • 6

Fold the bottom string to the left, up and over the first horizontal string and under the second. Pull the string so it is flush with the vertical strings.

    • 7

Pull the four strings so they are tight in the center, forming a square. Tightening the strings will eliminate the loops on all four sides of the plus sign.

    • 8

Reposition the strings to form a plus sign. Repeat steps 3 through 7 until the square braid is the desired length.

    • 9

Cut the excess string from the square braid. Cut the strings so they are flush with the outside edge of the braid.

    • 10

Squeeze a dime-sized drop of white glue on a paper plate. Dip the end with the cut strings into the glue, making sure to cover each cut string. Allow the glue to dry 15 minutes before use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add a split keyring, hook or jewelry clasp to the ends of the square braid.
