How to Control the Quality of YouTube on an iPad

Both the iOS YouTube app and the mobile version of YouTube’s website allow you to change the video quality of movies on your iPad when you’re connected over Wi-Fi. However, when you’re connected using a cellular network, you can change video quality only on the mobile website, not the YouTube app, which automatically selects the video quality.

YouTube App

  • In the YouTube app, tap the Menu button, resembling three stacked squares, and then tap “Video quality.” The available resolution options display, with the current setting noted with the word “selected” in parentheses. Tap the option you prefer to change the video display to that resolution.

Mobile Site

  • To enable or disable a higher-quality resolution for a video, tap the “HQ” icon on the video thumbnail. When enabled, the icon is red; otherwise it is grayed out. If you do not see this button, the video does not have any resolution options available.
