How to Delete a VMware Image

Many people create VMware virtual machines with the intention of using them temporarily. For example, you might create a virtual machine to test a free software program before installing it on your computer, to confirm that the program works as advertised. After doing this, there is little reason to allow the virtual machine to continue consuming space on your hard drive. Delete a virtual machine image to reclaim hard drive space if you have no intention of using the virtual machine again.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch VMware Player and right-click the name of the virtual machine that you want to delete.

    • 2

      Click "Delete VM from Disk."

    • 3

Click "Yes" to indicate that you understand you are deleting the virtual machine image from your computer permanently, and that you cannot reverse the process. This removes the virtual machine from your computer and deletes all associated files.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also delete a virtual machine image by manually deleting the associated files from your computer using Windows Explorer. The next time you load VMware Player, VMware will be unable to locate the virtual machine and will ask if you want to remove it from the list. Click "Remove Virtual Machine from Library" to do this.

  • When you delete a VMware image from your computer, you also delete the virtual hard drive for that virtual machine. Before doing this, make sure that any files on the virtual machine that you want to keep are moved to your computer's host operating system.
