Koi can be kept indoors if their habitat is properly maintained.

Koi are long-lived pet fish known for their vibrant colors and beautiful patterns. In Asian cultures, these colorful carp are considered good luck for their owners. Although keeping koi indoors in aquariums is not as common as keeping them outdoors in ponds, it can be done with proper attention to aquarium habitat and feeding. Maintaining a proper indoor environment will ensure a long, healthy life for these "lucky" koi.

Instructions

    • 1

Condition the water for at least a week before adding the koi. You have to ensure that the water if free of chlorine; heavy metals like zinc, lead and copper; gases; and dissolved solutes before introducing koi and plants into the new aquarium.

    • 2

Install sufficient air and chemical filtration systems. Koi can easily turn water murky due to their constant swirling of the bottom. They also eat a lot and excrete much waste, contributing to the problem.

    • 3

Install a heating system to keep temperatures ranging from 61 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 4

Use an aquarium cover. Koi are active fish and will frequently jump out of the water when excited or playing.

    • 5

Place the aquarium in a well-lighted area, allowing for at least 12 hours of natural sunlight each day and natural darkness at night; however, keep the fish out of direct sunlight. Install an artificial indirect lighting system if you want to showcase the koi coloring.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ensure that your koi are protected from indoor predators like the household cat or dog.

  • If you want your koi to grow large, they need a lot of room. You need 10 gallons of water for every inch of excluding the tail. This means that for a 12-inch koi, you will need at least 120 gallons of water.

  • Consider artificial plants. Koi are destructive to real plants, often tearing and uprooting them.

  • As koi can grow very fast, you have to make pond provisions when they outgrow their aquariums.
