How to Broil Thawed Steak

How to Broil Thawed Steak thumbnail
Fresh steaks can be purchased at your grocery store and frozen.

When you find a package of your favorite steaks packaged for value, it's hard to pass up the savings. Whatever you don't use, you can repackage, freeze and thaw at a later date. Once you've completely thawed a frozen steak, the broiling process is no different than if you were working with a fresh steak directly from the grocery store. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Position the top oven rack so that it's approximately 4 inches to 5 inches from the top of the oven. Set the oven to Broil so it can begin heating.

    • 2

Trim all excess fat away from the steaks with a knife. Season the steak with your desired seasonings, such as salt and pepper. Place the steak on the broiling pan and put it into the heated oven.

    • 3

Set a timer for five minutes for broiling the top side. The thicker the cut, the longer it will need to broil.

    • 4

Grab the steak with a pair of tongs and turn it over so the other side will broil. Set the timer for an amount of time equal to the time you broiled the first side.

    • 5

Place oven mitts on your hands and remove the broiling pan and steak from the oven. A rare steak will be 125 degrees Fahrenheit when a meat thermometer is inserted into the steak (without touching any bone); medium rare is 135 degrees Fahrenheit; medium is 145 degrees Fahrenheit; and well-done is 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Slit the outer fat layer of the steak with a knife at 2-inch intervals. This will prevent the steak from curling, according to Diane Roupe, author of "The Blue Ribbon Country Cookbook." Avoid cutting into the meat or it will lose some of its juices as it broils.

  • Never use a fork to turn a steak because it will pierce the meat and cause it to lose juices.
