How to Automatically Adjust Column Width in Excel 2007

Each time you create a new Excel 2007 spreadsheet, the system uses the settings located in the "book.xltx" file. This file is opened when you start Excel, so you have a main template from which to start the spreadsheet layout. To edit the default column width and have the width changed automatically, you must edit the "book.xltx" file on your system.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" button on the computer that contains Excel and type "book.xltx" (without quotes) in the search text box. Press "Enter." This feature search for the location of the template file.

    • 2

Double-click the "book.xltx" file shown in the results window. This opens the file in your system in Excel. All edits made to this file are shown the next time you create a new spreadsheet.

    • 3

Hover the mouse over the line that indicates the end of the column. The mouse changes to a "left and right" arrow, which means you can size the column. Drag the width to the size you wish to make the column. Repeat step three until each column's width meets your requirements. Press "Ctrl+S" to save the changes.

    • 4

Press "Ctrl+N" to create a new spreadsheet. Notice the spreadsheet's column width automatically sizes to the settings you created in the "book.xltx" file.
