How to Manually Restart a VMWare Guest
Any operating system can become unstable or unresponsive in certain situations, including an operating system running on a virtual machine. However, while you can manually restart a physical computer by holding the power button, this is not an option when running VMware -- holding the power button on your computer would cause the computer itself to shut down. For this reason, VMware gives you the option to restart an unresponsive virtual machine manually by clicking the appropriate option at the top of the window.

Tips & Warnings
To see the options described in this article on VMware Fusion for the Mac, hold the "Option" or "Alt" key on the keyboard after opening the "Virtual Machine" menu.
As with a physical computer, turning the power of a virtual machine off will cause you to lose all unsaved work. If possible, save all open files before restarting or turning off the virtual machine.
