    • 2

Strike the black walnut firmly with a hammer to remove the hull. The hull, also called the husk, is the slightly fleshy covering that protects the shell.

    • 3

Remove the fragments of the husk from the walnut's shell.

    • 4

Repeat steps 1 through 3 for all of the walnuts.

    • 5

Place the walnuts in a cloth bag.

    • 6

Tie off the opening of the cloth bag with a rubber band.

    • 7

Hit the bag with a mallet until the shells are broken.

    • 8

Hand sort the walnut meats from the shells.

    • 9

Rinse the walnut meats to rid them of any shell fragments.

    • 10

Spread the walnuts on a cookie sheet in a warm dry place for at least 24 hours to dry before eating them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place your unhusked walnuts on a gravel driveway and drive over them several times to crack the husks.
