Set the black walnut on a hard surface like a work bench or a sturdy kitchen table.

Strike the black walnut firmly with a hammer to remove the hull. The hull, also called the husk, is the slightly fleshy covering that protects the shell.

Remove the fragments of the husk from the walnut's shell.

Repeat steps 1 through 3 for all of the walnuts.

Place the walnuts in a cloth bag.

Tie off the opening of the cloth bag with a rubber band.

Hit the bag with a mallet until the shells are broken.

Hand sort the walnut meats from the shells.
