A caregiver may help an elderly couple stay in their home longer.

People are living longer than ever, and the average person may live over 20 years as a retiree. Most retirement budgets won't allow for years of nursing home care. Depending on the level of care needed, for some elderly couples, the most practical option is for the couple to stay in their home as long as possible. If you have aging parents or other relatives who need assistance in their home, consider hiring a caregiver.

Create a job description that includes a list of expectations for your potential employee. Your hiring choice will depend on the level of care the elderly couple needs.

Inquire among family members first. It may be possible for several people to take turns meeting the couples' needs. This method can save money and can work with a few guidelines in place. Keep a detailed calendar of appointments and activities and leave a notebook out where each caregiver can write a detailed entry of concerns, special needs or tasks that need to be completed.

Consult you local yellow pages or an online directory for caregiving agencies in your area. These agencies hire qualified individuals who have passed background checks and are bonded. Call each agency and ask what kinds of services they are able to provide. Most provide help with errands, light housekeeping, cooking and companionship but may not be able to administer medication.

Place an ad in your local classifieds if you prefer a private duty caregiver. Be sure to ask for references and perform a background check if you do not know the individual personally. This option may cost significantly less than hiring an agency, and you may also offer a live-in arrangement.
