How to Turn Feet Into Square Feet
The task of calculating square feet is as simple as it gets once you have a few measurements in feet. Determining square feet is important when trying to sell or buy a house. Houses are measured in square feet by the sellers and presented in square feet to the buyers. Note the length of the area you're measuring in feet. You can use your tape measure to determine the length of the area in question. Be sure to measure in feet and not inches. Write your measurement down in feet.

Note the width of the area in feet. Measure this in feet with your tape measure. Write down the final measurement in feet and not inches.

Multiply the length and the width together using a calculator. The result will be the total square feet. For example, if the length was 8 feet and the width was 10 feet, the square footage is 80 square feet.

Tips & Warnings
Record the measurements using quarter feet, half feet or three-quarter feet to ensure accuracy if the number is not even.
If you are determining the square footage for your house, make sure not to include your garage because it does not count toward the total.
