Free Recovery of a Lost Password

Passwords are needed for many desktops, netbooks, laptops and other technology devices. Some shared home computers have multiple passwords on them, one for every person who uses the computer. Usually the strength of the password is predicated on the length of the password and the kinds of characters used, unless a free password recovery tool is used.

Things You'll Need

  • Password recovery software
  • Blank CD-R
  • Download a freeware password cracking program. When the menu opens asking whether to save the program or run it, select Save. Save the program to your desktop for easy retrieval. An explanation of Ophcrack is done for this tutorial.

  • Install software. Click the installation file that you downloaded. The file will end in a .exe extension. Password cracking software can be run from your system or burned onto a CD.

  • Insert a blank CD-R into the CD/DVD drive of your computer. Burn software to CD for portability. You will have to use a friend's computer if you are locked out of your own system.

  • Power on the system. Ophcrack will run on its own. Allow the system to run. When the program recovers all the passwords, they will be displayed on a password recovery screen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some virus scanners see password recovery tools as a virus. You may have to turn off virus detection when running a password recovery tool.
  • Never use free recovery programs to obtain anyone else's password.
