How to Close a Facebook Account You No Longer Have Access To

Get a new password to access Facebook and close an unwanted account.

If you've fallen out of love with Facebook and no longer use the social networking site, you may want to close your Facebook account. If you can't access Facebook because you've forgotten your password, you have to get a new password before you can close the account. With the new password, you can easily delete your Facebook account from the "Account Settings" section of your Facebook profile.

Instructions

1. Open your Web browser and navigate to Facebook.

2. Click the "Forgot Your Password?" link below the password field on the login page.

3. Type the answers to the security questions in the relevant dialog boxes. Enter the "captcha" security code into the pop-up dialog box. Click the check box beside your email address to select it, or enter a new email address into the email field.

4. Click the "Reset Password" button. Wait for Facebook to email you the new password. This usually takes a few minutes. Access your email account to get the new password.

5. Navigate to Facebook. Log in with your email address and the new password.

6. Click "Account " from the menu at the top of your homepage or profile page, and select "Account Settings" from the drop-down menu.

7. Find the "Deactive Account" heading in the list of settings options.

8. Click the "Deactivate" link in the "Deactivate Account" section. Click "Confirm" when prompted.

Tips & Warnings

• Facebook saves your account information in case you will want to re-open the account at a later date. However, your profile and all personal information is removed, so friends will no longer be able to find you on the site.
