How to Reset Grave Markers

How to Reset Grave Markers thumbnail
Carefully remove a grave marker to avoid damaging it.

Grave markers set improperly in the ground when initially placed may sink or tilt as time passes. Aging and weather conditions can also cause them to sink and tilt. Resetting a grave marker requires removing it from the ground so the base can be repaired. Cemeteries typically handle the placement and removal of grave markers. Ask for permission if you plan to reset a grave marker yourself. Family- or town-owned cemeteries require you to get permission before resetting a grave marker.

Instructions

  1. Reset in Sand and Dirt

    • 1

Dig around the grave marker using the shovel. Remove about two inches of dirt around each side of the base. Remove the grave marker and set it to the side.

    • 2

Evaluate the grave marker's base. For smaller grave markers, fill the hole with some sand and a little of the dirt you removed. Use the level to ensure that the base is flat.

    • 3

Place the grave marker in the hole. Place the level on top of the grave marker to make sure it's level in the ground. If it's not level, remove it and add more sand to the hole. If the stone is level, fill in the remaining area around it with dirt and sand. Tightly pack the dirt and sand until it's flat, which will make the marker more secure. Clean up the area; put your leftover debris in the garbage bag to take with you.

    Reset in Concrete

    • 4

Dig around the grave marker using the shovel. Remove about two inches of dirt around each side of the base. Remove the grave marker and set it to the side.

    • 5

Dig another four inches into the ground. Level the hole's bottom and sides. Fill the hole with about three inches of concrete; then level. Allow the concrete to dry for one to two days before resetting the marker.

    • 6

Place the grave marker in the hole on top of the concrete base. Fill in the remaining area around the grave marker with dirt and sand. Tightly pack the dirt and sand until it's flat, which will make the grave marker more secure. Clean up the area; put leftover debris in the garbage bag to take with you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask for help when resetting a grave marker on your own. Grave markers are heavy.

  • Gently place the grave marker to the side to avoid cracking or damage.

  • Always obtain permission to reset the grave marker yourself.

  • If you're using concrete to stabilize the base, let the cemetery know the stone will be out of place for a day or two while the concrete dries.
