Heart Pattern Friendship Bracelet Instructions

Heart Pattern Friendship Bracelet Instructions thumbnail
Freindship bracelets are a treasure to make and give.

A handmade friendship bracelet is a pretty reminder that you care about someone. A heart-shaped pattern in a soft bracelet that she can tie onto her wrist creates a special gift. Here we are using strands of blue and pink but you can choose two of your friend's favorite colors to make the bracelet, as long as you make sure that the colors contrast enough to see the heart pattern.

Things You'll Need

  • Large safety pin
  • Embroidery floss, string, yarn or just about any thin, round rope-like material -
  • 2 strands blue, 65-inch; 2 strands pink, 65-inch
  • Pillow

Instructions

    • 1

Gather your strands together so that they line up evenly. Fold them in half. Open your safety pin and slide the strands in at their center point. Pin to a pillow. Divide the strands in half and tie them, creating a half-inch loop just below the pin.

    • 2

Fan the strands flat on the pillow in the following pattern, left to right: pink, blue, pink, blue, blue, pink, blue, pink.

    • 3

Make a knot by tying the far left pink strand to the blue one next to it. (Cross the pink strand over the blue, then under it and then up between the two and pulling tight. Knots are made by tying twice.)

    • 4

Knot the same pink strand to the pink strand that was next to the blue one you just put the knots on (the third one from the left.)

    • 5

Use the same pink strand to make the next knot onto the next blue strand -- the one that was in fourth position from the left. You should have four remaining strands on the right that have not yet been touched.

    • 6

Pick up the pink strand that is on the far right. Knot it to the blue strand to the left of it it in the same way -- over, under, up, pull tight, repeat. Moving to the left still, knot that pink strand to the pink strand that is between the blue strands. Finally, make a knot with the same pink strand to the last blue strand.

    • 7

Your two pink strands that were on the outer edges are now in the middle. Knot the one that came from the left side to the one that came from the right.

    • 8

Fan the strands flat in the new left-to-right pattern: blue, pink, blue, pink, pink, blue, pink, blue. Repeat the knotting steps, using the blue outer strands to knot onto the others. Knot the blue strands together when they meet in the middle.

    • 9

Knot the blue strand that is in the second to the left position onto the pink strand that is on the outer left.

    • 10

Knot the blue strand that is in the second to the right position onto the pink strand that is on the outer right. The pattern now lays as blue, pink, pink, blue, blue, pink, pink, blue.

    • 11

Knot the pink second strand from the left to the pink third strand and then knot it to the fourth blue strand. Knot the pink second strand from the right to the pink third strand and then knot it to the blue strand, fourth from the left. Knot the two pink strands that are now in the middle together.

    • 12

Repeat this last step of knotting the second strands in to the outer ones and then to the center ones and then tying them together.

    • 13

Repeat the entire process until you have only four inches of strand left. Divide these in half and braid or tie them into two ends. Unpin the loop and tie the ends to your friend's wrist.
