Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the area (in feet) you want to cover with carpet. If the room is relatively small, a tape measure should suffice. If the room is larger, you may need to use a land tape measure.

    • 2

Calculate the room's square footage using this formula: Area = length x width. If the value comes out to be a decimal, always round up because it is always better to have extra carpet and trim it down.

    • 3

Determine if the carpet is priced per square yard or foot. If the carpet is priced per square foot, take the square footage information from Step 2 and multiply it by the price per square foot to get the total price of the carpet. If the carpet is priced per square yard, you will need to divide the square footage information from Step 2 by 9 before multiplying it by the price per square yard.

Apply any sales tax to the subtotal price of the carpet. If the sales tax in your state is 8.25 percent, divide the percentage by 100 to convert it into decimal form. Multiply the sales tax (in decimal form) with the total price of the carpet to obtain the sales tax. For example, if the price of your carpet was $1,000 with a sales tax of 8.25 percent, the total sales tax is $82.50 (1000 x .0825 = 82.50).

Add the sales tax with price of the carpet to calculate the total cost of the carpet
