Pour 1 cup or 3/4 cup of oatmeal into a microwave-safe bowl. If you're using instant oatmeal that features a full serving in a packet, empty the packet into a bowl. Add the suggested amount of water (or milk for a creamier texture) and stir. Generally speaking, this amount is 1/4 cup to 1/3 of a cup. Add an additional tablespoon of water or milk and re-stir.

Place the bowl in a microwave, set the power to medium heat and cook the oats for no more than 3 minutes. Take the bowl out, stir again and cook for an additional 30 seconds. The trick to this method is adding a slight bit more liquid than required, which prevents the oatmeal from drying out and getting gummed up.
