Instructions

    • 1

Pour 1 cup or 3/4 cup of oatmeal into a microwave-safe bowl. If you're using instant oatmeal that features a full serving in a packet, empty the packet into a bowl. Add the suggested amount of water (or milk for a creamier texture) and stir. Generally speaking, this amount is 1/4 cup to 1/3 of a cup. Add an additional tablespoon of water or milk and re-stir.

    • 2

Place the bowl in a microwave, set the power to medium heat and cook the oats for no more than 3 minutes. Take the bowl out, stir again and cook for an additional 30 seconds. The trick to this method is adding a slight bit more liquid than required, which prevents the oatmeal from drying out and getting gummed up.

    • 3

Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of cream, milk, jelly or another such sweet condiment to already-prepared oatmeal that's gummy. Stir it vigorously and reheat the bowl. Repeat as necessary to moisten the dry oatmeal enough and eliminate the rubbery texture.

Tips & Warnings

  • The above still applies if you're making stovetop oatmeal; simply add more liquid than what's advised but take care to not allow all of the liquid to boil away while on the stove.
