Make a colorful ribbon choker to match your personality.

You can make your own ribbon choker, creating a unique and inexpensive fashion accessory to wear with a special nightclub outfit or with a pair of skinny jeans and button-up blouse. Ribbon chokers are easy to make and can be customized with a special necklace pendant, a flamboyant silk flower or sparkling iron-on gemstones. When making a ribbon choker for a child, have her help out with the project by choosing her preferred ribbon colors and decorative embellishments.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of your neck. Cut a piece of solid-colored 1-1/2 inch wide ribbon to this length.

    • 2

Lay the ribbon on a flat surface and smooth out any creases.

    • 3

Cut a piece of solid-colored 3/4 inch wide ribbon to the same length as the wider ribbon.

    • 4

Apply a little bit of fabric glue to the back of the 3/4 inch ribbon. Smooth the narrower ribbon down the center of the 1-1/2 inch ribbon.

    • 5

Use a sewing machine or sewing needle to make a straight stitch down the edges of the 3/4 inch ribbon. Affix it securely to the wider ribbon.

    • 6

Place the choker on a heat-resistant surface, such as an ironing board. Arrange 12 to 14 iron-on gemstones on the 3/4 inch ribbon. Space the gemstones approximately 1 inch apart. Turn on and set the iron to low heat and press the iron against the gemstone to melt the gemstone's glue.

    • 7

Attach the fold-over crimp ends. Place one of the ribbon ends on the fold-over crimp end. Squeeze one side of the crimp end closed with the pliers and then fold the other side of the crimp end over with the pliers. Do the same to attach the crimp end to the other end of the ribbon choker.

    • 8

Attach the necklace clasp. Open a jump ring with a pair of tweezers or pliers. Slide the circle at the end of one of the crimp ends onto the jump ring. Slide a necklace clasp onto the same jump ring and then pinch the jump ring closed with the pliers or tweezers.
