How to Grow Thicker Grass
Lush, thick lawns don't always just grow that way -- you must tend to your lawn and encourage thicker grass to grow. Your job starts early in the summer, so you can plant grass seed and give it time to grow in with the existing grass over the course of the season. By getting a jump start on your lawn care and keeping up with it all summer long, you ensure that your lawn grows in thick and green instead of patchy or brown. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Mow your lawn as short as possible early in the season, and rake up the clippings to expose your yard's soil.
-
2
Till the soil throughout your yard with a metal garden rake to loosen it up, creating a bed for your grass seed. Distribute seed across the yard, using two or three times the amount recommended on the package.
-
-
3
Pour a 1/4-inch layer of compost over the grass seed. Water the seeds daily until they reach a height of 3 to 4 inches.
-
4
Mow your lawn frequently enough so that you only cut one-third of its height in a single cutting. For example, if you wish to maintain 2-inch grass leaves, cut the grass when it is 3 inches high.
-
5
Cut the grass only when it is dry and only with sharp lawn mower blades. If your blades are dull or the grass is saturated, the grass may become diseased, damaged or smothered to death.
-
6
Leave grass clippings on the lawn after you cut the grass. They fertilize the soil and encourage healthy growth.
-
7
Check for weeds frequently. Wearing gloves, uproot weeds when you see them -- alternately, treat them with an herbicide.
