How to Make a Fake Murder Scene for Halloween
No other day gives the excuse to revel in gore and horror that Halloween does. It's hard to go over-the-top, even in decorating with mayhem and murder. Staging a fake murder scene for Halloween takes a few simple props and a little bit of time. Be sure to keep a photographic log of each step in case it proves so realistic that the police are called out to investigate a gruesome crime. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Right arm and right leg of a mannequin, preferably female
- Blonde wig with long hair
- Inexpensive butcher knife
- Metal file
- Old steamer trunk or something similar
- Reciprocating saw
- Blankets and old clothes
- 1 gallon inexpensive liquid soap
- 1 gallon glycerine
- Red and blue food coloring
- Cotton balls
- Blue model paint
- 2 packets cherry gelatin
- Axe
- Paintbrushes
- Glue
- Rope and stanchions for cordon.
Instructions
-
-
1
Dull the blade and the point on the butcher knife by running it across a metal file.
-
2
Cut a 2-inch long and very narrow slot in the top of the trunk with a reciprocating saw. This is where the knife is to go later. Fill the trunk with blankets to the top, and place a variety of old clothes on them.

3
Create two kinds of fake blood. Pour inexpensive liquid soap into a gallon bucket and add red food coloring until the correct color is reached. Darken it a little with blue food coloring if you desire an older looking blood. Set aside for later. This will be a thin blood for coating large areas.
-
4
Heat 1 gallon of glycerine on the stove. Add two packages of cherry gelatin and mix well. If you need more red, you can add some food coloring and mix in. Cool it down and set aside for later. This will be a thicker blood, with good texture for simulating clots and chunks.
-
5
Put large and deep gouges into the mannequin arm and leg with a sharp axe. Stuff the holes with cotton balls soaked in water with a touch of pink food coloring added. Smooth the cotton out so that it is just under the skin level. When the cotton dries out, paint some blue veins in it with blue model paint and the small brush.
-
6
Arrange the arm so that it is sticking out from the inside of the trunk as if it is attached to a body stuffed in the trunk. It should be along the right side of the front of the trunk. The mannequin leg should stick out from the left end of the trunk, with copious amounts of blonde hair sticking from the other side. The overall effect should look as if someone was stuffed into the trunk, but a sloppy job was done of it.
-
7
Reach through the partially open lid of the trunk and pull out some of the old clothes to fill in the gap between the lid and the trunk so that no one can look to see that there is not really a body in the trunk.
-
8
Splash the soapy blood everywhere throughout the area. An effective technique is to fill a paintbrush with the blood and then hard-snap the brush once as if you were shaking it out. This simulates the look of blood spatter after a knife slashes through a body portion.
-
9
Paint a realistic blood flow pattern on the arm, leg, hair and sides of the trunk with the glycerine mixture.
-
10
Slip the knife into the slot on the top of the trunk until it is about halfway down. Glue it so that it holds its place. Liberally apply the glycerine blood to the blade of the knife.
-
11
Cordon off the area with the trunk and body parts to avoid anyone getting too close to the scene.
