How to Thump a Good Watermelon
Despite all the advancements in agricultural science, many produce purists will argue that the best, most tried-and-true method for selecting a sweet and juicy watermelon is still using "the thump." Outstanding watermelons are more than 90 percent juice, which provides an excellent medium for sound waves to travel. When tapped with the fingertips, whacked with an open palm or thumped sharply with the back of a finger, the choicest watermelons will resonate with a deep, hollow sound. Does this Spark an idea?

Pick up the watermelon with both hands and check its weight. It should feel very heavy for its size. Switch the watermelon over to one hand or arm.

Brace your middle fingernail against the pad of your thumb with your free hand, pushing the two together with force

.Flick your middle finger outward, striking the top of your nail sharply against the watermelon's skin.Listen for the "thump", which indicates that the watermelon is juicy and ripe.

Tips & Warnings
The sound a watermelon makes should have resonance. If it thuds, stops short or makes a less distinct sound, the melon is not ready to be consumed.
Be careful to not drop the watermelon or hurt yourself when thumping. Watermelons are heavy and hard.
