How to Make Dip Bait
Dip bait, also known as stink bait, is used to attract catfish to a lure. Making dip bait is not complicated. However, it does take a couple of weeks to complete the process and the smell can be difficult to handle. It is also important to wait until the weather turns hot before you attempt to make it.
Things You'll Need
- 36 lbs. of hog brains
- 40 lbs. of cheese
- 1 gallon of small baitfish
- Trash can or barrel
- Quart jars

1
Leave the hog brains, which you can obtain at a meat market, in a hot, sunny place for two to three days. Leave them uncovered, as exposure to direct sunlight and heat will cause them to sour and expedite the process. You can use a plastic tub, trash can or any other large container to hold them.

2
Grate the cheese. You can use a meat grinder for this task if necessary. You can use whatever type of cheese you can acquire cheaply and you can grate it at any point prior to mixing it with the rest of the ingredients.

Place all the ingredients into a large container such as a trash can. Only fill the container one-third full. This is because the bait will expand inside the container. Place a lid securely on the container to keep out animals and flies. Place the container in a warm location and stir it every other day for two weeks. Divide the bait into as many quart jars as you need, filling them only halfway due to expansion. Seal the jars tightly (to contain the odor) and store them someplace where the smell will not be an issue (such as an outdoor shed.)

Tips & Warnings
You may end up with maggots in your bait. Do not be concerned. They will die quickly and will not affect your bait. This bait will last you two fishing seasons if you fish on a regular basis. Making a large amount is beneficial because the longer it sits the more effective it is. If you wish, you can use half the ingredients to make one season's worth. Dip bait is less effective against other fish.
