But ready-made, cool-looking binders can come with hefty price tags. Luckily, you can encourage your child to express her creativity by customizing an inexpensive binder herself. Your child is likely to take great pride in the stylish binder that is hers alone.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a binder that has clear plastic sleeves on the covers. Remove the paper that's under these sleeves.

    • 2

Help your child to brainstorm about what she wants her binder to say about her. Encourage her to think of a theme. It might be a color, a sport, a favorite animal or anything else that appeals to her.

    • 3

Gather together a good selection of materials to make collages to decorate the front and back covers of the binder. Leaf through old magazines and catalogs. Encourage your child to cut out images that suit her chosen theme.

    • 4

Cover your work surface with old newspapers to protect it. Lay out the two sheets of paper that will form the front and back covers. Give your kid some time to arrange her materials. Once she has designs she likes, help her to glue them to the sheets of paper and slip the finished collages into the binder's clear plastic sleeves.

Tips & Warnings

  • Young children should use safety scissors and need adult supervision while cutting with them.
