How to Create a 16x16 Icon

Generally speaking, many websites use 16-by-16 pixel icons for user account photos and other types of images. While design programs that you can purchase allow you to create 16-by-16 icons, you don't need to buy a photo-editing program to create a 16-by-16 icon. All Microsoft Windows operating systems include access to the Microsoft Paint program, which allows you to adjust image sizes.

  • Click "Start" and type "Paint" into the "Search" box. Press "Enter."

  • Click "File" and "Open." Browse to the image you want to make a 16-by-16 icon and double-click it. The image opens on the screen.

  • Click the "Image" menu and click "Attributes."

  • Click the "Pixels" radio button under "Units." Type "16" into the width box and "16" into the height box.

  • Click "OK."

  • Press "Ctrl" and "S" to save the icon.
