On a rainy or very hot day, do a craft project with your kids. Using a piece of foam, you can make a foam toy boat in minutes. A boat made from foam can float on a rain puddle, in the pool or a cool bathtub of water. This project is kid friendly but does require the assistance of an adult to cut the foam. With a little paint or permanent markers, decorate the boat in any design or color that suits you.
Things You'll Need
- Sheet of foam
- Ink pen or dull pencil
- Scissors or sharp knife
- Acrylic paint
- Bottle of fabric glue
Sketch a picture of a boat hull on the foam sheet with an ink pen. The hull is the body of a boat or ship. Draw the hull so it looks like the face of a clothes iron, a triangle with rounded curved sides.
Draw a sail on the unused end of foam using an ink pen. Make the shape a 90-degree right triangle.
Cut out the hull and the sail with the sharp knife or scissors. If children are doing this project, have an adult cut out the foam shapes.
Dip a small bristle paintbrush into acrylic paint and add stripes or any design on the hull of the boat. You can also paint symbols or write your name.
Put a horizontal line of glue in the center of the hull, equal to the length of the sail. Put the sail on the glue line and hold it in place until it starts to set firmly on the hull. Push the t-pin through the bottom of the hull up through the sail. The pin holds the sail in place until the glue dries completely.
