How to Calculate Postage for Shipping

The United States Postal Service charges postage for any item you want to send in the mail. USPS calculates postage based on the item's size, weight, destination and the USPS service selected. Shipping rates vary significantly depending on these factors. To help you estimate your shipping costs, USPS offers an online postage calculation tool.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the USPS online postage calculation tool (See Resources).

    • 2

Select either the "Calculate Domestic Postage" or "Calculate International Postage" option.

    • 3

Enter the destination country from the drop-down menu for international shipments or enter the ship to and ship from Zip codes for domestic shipments in the appropriate fields.

    • 4

Enter the estimated mailing date and time in the appropriate fields.

    • 5

Select either a flat-rate mailing option or the approximate shape of your shipment.

    • 6

Enter the weight of your shipment in pounds and ounces.

    • 7

Click the "Continue" button to display available postage rates for your shipment. The available postage rates will show you the rates for different mailing services offered by USPS based on your shipment's weight and destination.
