How to Make a Perfect Bow Tie
For many young men, learning to tie a tie is a rite of passage passed from father to son. In most cases this lesson focuses on neck ties. This has resulted in making the skill of tying bow ties somewhat of a lost art. However, in recent years, pop fashion has grown from "preppy" and "put together" to searching for anything different and individualistic. This new trend is reviving the use and appreciation of bow ties. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 2 inch-wide strip of material - long enough to fit around neck and loop
- Mirror
- Collared shirt

Stand in front of a mirror.

Flip up your shirt's collar.

Place the strip of materials around your neck, leaving the left side to hang approximately 1 inch longer than right side.

Cross the left side over right side and pull it through the center. Keeping the tie tight to your neck at all times.

Make a single loop with the right side centered to where the knot will be made.

Cross the long ended piece over shortest piece.

Make a single loop with the longest piece of the material, making sure the end is the widest part.

Push the loop made with longest piece behind the knot made with first loop.

Tighten the knot by pulling on its loops. Be sure to not to collapse the form by shrinking the loops excessively.

Check the shape and form of the tie by viewing it in the mirror. Make any fine-tuning adjustments to keep it symmetrical.

Flip down the short collar over the tie and button your collar if buttons are present.

Tips & Warnings
Practice making the bow tie a number of times prior to attending the event where it will be worn
Measure and test your tie material to ensure there is an adequate amount of length.
Uneven bow tie looks sloppy. Ensure loops are same size and knot is at center.
