If you no longer need a hard drive or partition, you can format it to prepare it for other use. Formatting is the act of preparing a hard disk for storage. Windows XP provides various ways to configure and delete hard disk partitions. You can conveniently format a hard drive by accessing the "My Computer" folder or by using the Disk Management utility.

  1. Format by Accessing the "My Computer" Folder

      Click the "Start" button.

      Click "My Computer." You will see the partitions and drives on your computer.

      Right-click a hard drive under "Hard Disk" drives and click "Format."

      Select "Quick Format" if you want the format process to be quick. Click "Start" to format the hard drive.

    Format by Using Disk Management
